The Foundation operates as The Children's Fund of Metropolitan Washington to clearly reflect our current mission.
The Children's Fund of Metropolitan Washington is a project of the German Orphan Home of the District of Columbia. This organization was established in 1879 by the members of the Concordia Lutheran Church in Washington, D.C., a congregation of German-Americans. Its original purpose was to serve as a home for any child in the community who was destitute or orphaned, without respect for origin or religion. From the beginning, the mission of the organization was to offer a safe haven in which at-risk children could grow to adulthood in a secure environment. Today, as The Children's Fund of Metropolitan Washington, we continue this mission by using our resources to fund charitable organizations that serve at-risk children and youth within their own communities.
In 1958, the Dr. Anna Bartsch-Dunne Scholarship Fund was established to provide post secondary educational opportunities for the youth who grew up in the German Orphan Home. At the present time two area universities receive annual grants that are then competitively awarded by the universities to students in German language studies.
